01:41 am - Chinese Democracy I must say it is quite good. I already had heard about half of the songs through leaks, but most were demo versions and inferior to the final product. I don't know if I'm just surprised that it was realeased and doesn't suck. If "Oh My God" was going to be any sort of indication, expectations were not high. It's not going to be one of those albums that changes your life, but if you like the rock n' roll you won't be disappointed.

01:06 am - Lipstick on a pig I won't be voting for Obama, but this is ridiculous. As Obama called it..."phony outrage." I'm sure he'd be smart enough not to call Palin a pig. In hindsight, of course the connection would be made to the RNC speech. Shame on McCain for making an issue out of something as irrelevant as this.

06:36 pm - Am I old, or does Mtv just suck? I caught parts of the VMAs. I remember when I used to look forward to seeing the likes of Pearl Jam, Aerosmtih, even 'new' GnR. I have no idea who the host was nor did I recognize the majority of those involved. I guess I'm officially out of touch.

Back in the time they called "The 90's," Everclear was one of my favorite bands....the raw emotion of Sparkle and Fade was something I could appreciate. They went "pop" with "So Much for the Afterglow" but were still producing good songs and I dug it. There were some good takeaways with "Songs from an American Movie vol. 1 and 2."
Which brings us to "The Vegas Years"...not even good covers. They showed up on the radar because I was checking out shows at this summer's Iowa State Fair to see if there is anyone worth buying grandstand tickets for. Def Leppard I have seen before, and if you can take it for what it was...put on a great show when I saw them. Everclear is almost a detourant as an opening act. When a band is doing an album of covers with no original members other than the lead singer, you know they are in trouble.
I'll concede I'm somewhat lost in the 90s when it comes to 'newer' music. I like Death Cab and have been paying some attention to My Morning Jacket. Maybe I'm just getting old like those people that are pumped about seeing Foreigner at the 'Tenderloin Fest.' I hear nothing from new artists I like and I'm open to suggestions.
That's the music update....other than that...life is good. Like my job...family is doing well. I'll be in town next weekend if anyone is available to hang out. Give a call if interested. Current Music: "Highly Suspicious"

01:40 pm - Alone: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo What sounded like a good idea is turning out to be a bit of a disappointment. If I had paid money for this, I may have wanted it back. These recordings probably were best off left in the basement. Current Music: Alone: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo

01:55 am - Caucus
I attended the Iowa Caucus today. It was interesting to say the least. I think half of Pella was packed into the grade school gym. Most likely a fire hazard. I must say it didn't appear to be a very organized process. The ballots were just slips of paper that were turned in to a garbage bag for the corresponding district. If somebody really wanted to fabricate some votes, they could easily throw extra copies in one of the bags. I'm usually not swayed by celebrity endorsements, but when Chuck Norris comes forward, one can't help but be influenced.

12:30 pm - "THIS IS YOUR HOME....THIS IS YOUR WORK!!!" I'm at a point of uncertainty regarding Natalie and church. She's been going with me with some regularity over the past few months and I think we've found a church that we like. Today however she threw a little tantrem about not wanting to stay there and not liking church. My first reaction was to 1) make her stay or 2)go home then and there with some form of punishment (no video games, no hot chocolate, etc). On second thought I don't want to make church a negative thing that she feels she has to go to our else get in trouble. I want her to want to go. At the same time, I feel she is too young to decide for herself whether or not she goes...when she's older it will be her decision. Typically she has liked it and enjoys seeing her friends from school there. I think it was just an off day today, but I want to be cautious about how we approach the issue.

02:13 pm - Are You a Good Person? Somebody left a "$1000 Bill" on one of the other HR Rep's desk that had Santa on the front and this link. On the back was Santa's naughty list with assorted names, on the "nice" side was only one name - Jesus.

02:14 am - Old Friends
The time as always went quickly back in the B.C. I tried you, Brandon and Josh, but was unsucessfull. I'm hoping we'll work something out in December...Darius...I'm looking you too.
Dad and I took Natalie ice skating at the rink. It was around 8 this evening, so mostly older kids there. It was a bit of a time warp because I remember skating there when I was younger. There used to always be an older guy there that did spins and was a figure skater of sorts. He's still there. There were also a number of Pennfield high school kids.
Speaking of Pennfield kids, I went to meet Noah at the Griffin downtown and ended up running into Dustin Walsh, Nate Darlington, Blaire Bollinger (Vanderford), Leigh Masters, and Brian Pollack. They wern't all there together, but we ended up sitting together and getting caught up. (Not like Leigh and Brian were good friends of mine back in the day...it was funny, Leigh just wanted to know if I have had any contact with Clark recently and wanted me to tell him to get a hold of her if I talk to him again).
Not looking forward to the long ass drive tomorrow, but it was worth the trip. I think I gained about five pounds over the weekend.

12:48 am - Pearls of Wisdom Uncle Glenn, Grandpa, and Mom were here for the weekend. It was nice having them here. We hit the fair, an I-Cubs game, and visited the local winery. I asked my Grandpa how I can get to be 86 and still capable of driving states away, walking around in 80 degree weather all day, and still have the energy to take in a baseball game. His response was a quote that will be memorable to me: "Go home and cut the grass...even when it doesn't need it."
